Two main types of Stem Cells
The first type of stem cell that is mainly used in research is the embryonic stem cell. Embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos and have mostly been fertilized "in vitro" in an in vitro fertilization clinic. These are not derived from eggs fertilized in a woman's body.
The second main type of stem cell is the adult stem cell or the non-embryonic stem cell. An adult stem cell can be found among tissues and organs. The main difference between an embryonic stem cell and a non embryonic one is that an embryonic cell can change form to become any type of cell in the body while the non embryonic cell is limited in what it can transform into.
